After a bunch of chin scratching, I came up with this one: the mobile email list. It allows retail facing businesses to quickly and easily let their customers sign up for customer care programs using their cell phone, then uses text messaging to send coupons back to the customers. They are contributing Joltid software for 10% of the company. They are paying $83 million for 4% of the company (a discount, since that would value the $2.08 billion). Vonage posts 3Q loss
6 Nov 2009 | 10:46 amVonage posted a wider third-quarter loss of $54.6 million this week and blamed it on the stock rally they had that inflated share prices and resulted in a $63 million charge. The year-ago loss was only $7.8 million. Its share price spiked in August when Google announced its Voice application and investors took that move as a vote of confidence in the VoIP market--driving up Vonage's stock. But when I read through the release, I became much more interested. I became interested in 8×8’s new patent because it could potential impact other VoIP providers and VoIP equipment manufacturers in a major way. I’ve spent a little over a day at eComm meeting people, listening to the conversations and presentations happening and reflecting on what I’ve heard. During the panel yesterday afternoon, I noted that I spend less on voice, data, and text messaging each month than I ever have, but more money on communications over all. I just heard a comment which, to me, epitomises the difference between US views on prepaid mobile versus most of the rest of the world. It was made by someone who looks at subscriber data management, talking about crunching data for a "hypothetical" prepay provider.Setting the scene, he referred to the likelihood that c50% of users would be "illegal immigrants or former convicts".Utterly amazing.
