But it turns out that this snippet is part of a much larger collection of early color films titled The Open Road. The project, which will be the first new subway line built in NYC since 1932, was proposed back in the late 1920s but didn't begin its first phase of construction under Manhattan's Upper East Side until 2007. I'll post more about that later, but I just wanted to drop something in quickly about the lighting on the detail shots I was doing today. Grimmy (it's short for "Grandma Imy") asked me to take some pictures. I'm very good at shooting over-the-shoulder portraits in crowds (long practice), but it's tough to get to everybody when there are 350 people in the crowd! Between the attire and the background, I was dealing with a pretty monochromatic situation. I knew I was heading into a bigger project than I had anticipated, but by the time I knew that, I was locked into a tourist visa, and the carnet was set. So whatever was listed there was what was coming. Nothing more. Took in one D800E. Lenses were standard issue 14-24, 24-70, 70-200. On the exotic side, I took in my ancient 28 f1.4, a 35 f1.4, and an 85 f1.4. Done. My other camera was a (gulp) film camera, a Fuji pano, with a 40mm lens. To me, nothing ruins that more than that annoying photo info overlay that appears in the top left of the photo in the Library and Develop module (see image below). One of those questions is whether or not to create multiple catalogs in Lightroom. See, back in Lightroom 1, it became fairly common knowledge that when your catalog grew to a certain size in photos (say 20,000) that it would slow down and you should create a new catalog so Lightroom would keep running quickly. A Super Quick Way To Convert Your Photo To Black And White

Here’s a great little tip for you if you want to see quickly see what your photo looks like as a black and white, without going to a different panel and messing with sliders. Ready… just go to the Develop module and press the V key. Yup… that’s it. It does the default black and white conversion, and gives you a good idea of whether you’d want to process the photo any further as a B&W. If you like it, then head down to the B&W panel and make some more adjustments. If not, just press the V key again and it’ll take you back to the color…

Exploring the western edge of Tule Canyon near the MacKenzie Reservoir yields some of the most interesting history and geology in the entire state. Standing here on a cold spring morning, it’s easy to imagine this canyon filled with vast herds of buffalo being hunted by the Apache on horseback. Pricing and updates remain the same as for Lightroom 4 ($149 (for those new to Lightroom) and $79 for an Upgrade from previous versions. Lightroom 5 is the shortest upgrade cycle ever, and while not as rich in ‘big features’, it’s big on performance improvements and JDI (just do it) feature additions. 9 Jun 2013 | 10:01 pmFeature lists are one way of looking at what’s going on with a new program, so what’s my feelings about Ligtroom? The biggest thing about Lightroom 5 for me. is performance. Larger catalogs are far less of an issue, and getting files opened in Develop is far faster, especially if you make use of Smart Previews. Smart Previews are a game changer, albeit only in a limited fashion now. You can absolutely cheat by putting your catalog folder into Dropbox and running it from another machine with Smart Previews. However you need to be really careful never to have it running on 2… -

Here’s the short version: How do I upgrade my catalog from version 4 to version 5 If you’re ready to upgrade, first make sure you have a current catalog backup, just in case something goes wrong. Proper measures have been put in place to avoid disasters, but you can never be too careful. When you open Lightroom 5 for the first time, it should follow any existing Lightroom 4 preferences, and either prompt you for a catalog to open, or try to open your default catalog. What’s new in Lightroom 5.0?

As with previous versions, it is available as a perpetual license from Adobe and other resellers (full price $149, upgrade $79), as well as being included in the Creative Cloud. So what’s new? Adobe’s changes… let’s stop and take a breath
8 May 2013 | 5:49 amWell Adobe’s Creative Cloud announcement has certainly had a reaction! There are a lot of photographer’s being understandably vocal about the changes. Are Adobe listening? Er, yes, they can’t miss it! In a dpreview interview, Winston Hendrickson (VP of Creative Solutions) said “[we know there's] currently there’s not a lot of photography-specific value in our subscription products”. Adobe clearly knows that they have a LOT of work to do to win back photographers. But to be honest, that could be the best result possible for us as users. … -
Adobe goes subscription-only (but not for Lightroom)
6 May 2013 | 1:17 pmAt the AdobeMAX event today, Adobe announced that they will no longer be selling perpetual license for the Creative Suite. That’s now been rebranded as Creative Cloud, and will be available by subscription only. Technology, and life in general, are moving faster and faster, and 18-24 month upgrade cycles just don’t work that well anymore. Adobe wants to focus on providing changing technology as fast as they can. You can read their official letter and watch the keynote here. So what does that mean for photographers?
